INR 20 Lakh Crore Package by Indian Government

Two important points in the Government’s #20LakhCrorePackage

To revive the economy that’s almost shut down due to COVID 19, the Government of India came out with a slew of measures, announcing an INR 20 Lakh Crore package, which is about 10% of our GDP.

The economy was strained. The steel industry in particular was hugely affected due to the shut down of the industries, with the demand for steel contracting by a whopping 91% y-o-y in April 2020. Urgent steps in the right direction were the need of the hour.

Prior to the announcement of the package, PM Narendra Modi made a very important point on how this COVID 19 pandemic can be converted into an opportunity of growth for the Indian economy. We’ve seen local companies in countries such as China grow big really fast. Though the Indian business structure and the government work differently, under a democratic setup, we feel we can see this happen in India too, with a collective effort from all.

A lot of the MSMEs often find it hard to compete with foreign companies with huge funding and backgrounds, who can drive their prices down. It’s this cut throat competition that has slowed down the growth of the Indian companies.

With the government itself taking the initiative by stressing on the need for “Atmanirbharta”, and leading the country in giving more importance to the Indian companies by banning foreign tenders on government contracts which are worth less than INR 200 Crores, it’s a great time for the Indian companies to thrive.

Given the COVID 19 situation, India has acted quite swiftly in initiating one of the world’s biggest lockdown in history, to help control the spread of the virus. The central and state Governments, along with the entire medical staff, police personnel deserve applause for the fabulous job they are doing, to control the spread of the virus.

The Indian healthcare infrastructure isn’t strong enough compared to the western peers and with a population as big as ours, it adds a lot of pressure to the already frail system. Along with the test kits and PPEs, there’s also a rising demand for quarantine facilities, isolation wards and testing labs, across the huge landscape of India which houses very diverse population.

As of today, India has over 1 Lakh isolation beds and over 11,500 ICU beds across the country, with over 7500 active cases at the moment and the number surging at around 800 cases/day, despite the lockdown.

The demand for these health facilities is increasing by the day and there’s an urgent need to also prepare for the future, in case the number of cases surge, a very likely scenario. The facilities we’ve at present are going to be vastly insufficient and it could be catastrophic.

Budget 2020 & it’s impact on the steel industry!

The much awaited and hyped Indian budget for 2020 has been announced, bringing forth with it, lots of plans and hope for growth. Overall, it was a futuristic budget that our finance minister, Nirmala Sethuraman presented, with a major push on infrastructure.

The steel industry was focussed on two sectors in particular, in the lead upto the budget: The infrastructure and the automobiles. Both these industries were in a slowdown and that wasn’t great news for the steel consumption. Infrastructure sector contributes to about 50% of the steel consumption in the country with the automobile sector’s demand being just less than 20%.

With these sectors being in distress, as seen by the declining sales of cars and infrastructure sector, which shrunk for four months straight till the November – December period, the entirety of us, were looking forward to futuristic changes that would boost the domestic demand.

While the budget was warm towards the automobile sector, the infrastructure received a great boost. With the government’s keen intent to develop both commercial and residential infrastructure, seen by the increased budget allotment as well with a 22% increase in the capital expenditure, the steel industry can breathe a little easy. The rural economy too helps the consumption of steel to a great extent.

The impact can be observed in the marginal increase in steel prices in the past couple of months, ahead of the budget.

Post GST, we’ve seen a gradual growth of e commerce sector, which led to increase in the number of warehouses and supply chains. This, coupled with a lot of investments in the industrial construction sector, has been positive for the growth of steel.

The only sector where our industry isn’t seeing gradual growth is the automobile sector. The residential infrastructure continues to be a little weak and can be improved.

The widely termed “protectionist” move of the government, by agreeing to review the Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and the custom duties levied, to protect and boost the domestic consumption, augurs well for the industry and also aligns with the “Make In India” scheme.

Another important notion that must be mentioned is the push for renewable sources of energy and a sustainable developmental approach that the government has taken. To put this in perspective with the infrastructural push, steel would be used more in the construction process. This is also the overall vision of Volta Green Structures, to contribute to a sustainable development of the country with steel construction.

Overall, it was a budget that’s good enough to bolster the economic slump, especially of the steel industry, in the near future. But its long term, futuristic impact remains to be seen in the time to come.
